Private Norman Percy Waddy Millar
Norman Percy Waddy Millar was born on 10 September 1894 at Dufferin Avenue, Bangor, County Down, the fourth of six children of commercial agent David Millar and his wife Frances Percie (née Ewing). At the time of the 1901 Census he was living at Milltown, Ardstraw, County Tyrone, with his grandmother, farmer Ellen Millar, two uncles and two aunts, and his older sister Eileen Frances. Ten years later he was living at 70 Maryville Street, Belfast, with his parents and three surviving siblings, and working as an apprentice clerk.
Millar enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 24 or 25 May 1915 (No.1598). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France in 1916 or early 1917. There he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st or 2nd North Irish Horse Regiments.
On 9 July 1917 Millar was one of around thirty North Irish Horsemen who, being no longer physically fit for front-line service due to injury, age or illness, were transferred to the Labour Corps and posted to No.664 Home Service Labour Company. Millar was issued regimental number 333714. It appears, based on the records of some of these men, that they continued to serve at the North Irish Horse reserve depot at Antrim. He remained with the Labour Corps until the end of the war.
Millar later became a farmer at Milltown, Ardstraw. He died on 5 November 1963 at Altnegelvin Hospital, Londonderry.
